Gum disease is a progressive infection of the gums that begins as a condition called gingivitis. If caught early enough, it’s completely reversible, but unfortunately, if left unaddressed for too long it can turn into periodontal disease, which is much more dangerous and difficult to treat. In fact, it can eventually cost you your gum tissue, teeth, and even your jawbone.

Here’s a closer look at the symptoms of gum disease, possible treatments, and why it’s so important to see your dentist regularly!

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a progressive bacterial infection of the gums. The most common cause is poor oral hygiene habits, such as not brushing well or often enough, not flossing, and not seeing your dentist every six months for your regular dental cleanings. Neglecting these steps can allow bacteria to infiltrate your gums, causing inflammation and gum recession that can ultimately lead to tooth and bone loss.

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

According to the CDC, about 47 percent of American adults have some stage of gum disease. It begins as a condition known as gingivitis, which typically consists of mild gum inflammation and bleeding when you brush or floss. If caught in its early stages, gingivitis is usually completely reversible. In fact, typically all you need to do is brush and floss more frequently and it will clear up on its own.

If left untreated, however, it can evolve into periodontal disease, which is much more dangerous and can be a lot harder to treat. The symptoms of this stage include:

  • Loose teeth / tooth loss
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Pain while chewing
  • Bite changes
  • Receding gums
  • Bad breath

In addition to tooth loss, periodontal disease can cause your jawbone to deteriorate, which can increase tooth loss and require a bone graft to repair. If not treated in time, it can even make tooth replacements like dental implants a nonviable solution.

How Do You Treat Gum Disease?

Because every case of gum disease is different, there are many different options for treatment depending on your symptoms. For some patients, a root scaling and planing procedure will be needed to deep clean the teeth and gums. Antibiotic therapy may also be used to help the healing process.

If you are experiencing jawbone degradation, you may need a bone graft procedure to help prevent further bone loss and protect any remaining teeth. If you need to replace lost teeth, you may qualify for dental implants, or your dentist can recommend a suitable alternative.

Remember, gum disease is progressive, meaning that it can not only be prevented, but it can be treated before it’s too late. Regular visits to your dentist can help alert you to changes in your gum health and ensure that you get timely treatment, so be sure to visit him every six months for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments.
